About this deal

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I fly a fair amount, and I can tell you, with any flight, it’s really only takeoff and landing that are hard. And then, suddenly, it was as if the lens fell from my face, and I could suddenly see, in staggering black-and-white, what I had been doing.

A reader will be talking about a book and say, “That was the best book I have ever read, I couldn’t put it down.I’ve always had a penchant for guys with pretty eyes and five o’clock shadows, and I thought Gabby did, too. This rings true in the novel as Hannah experiences some themes in both lives but along a different timeline. Johnson discusses this in point 3 of her very insightful post from the perspective of a Black woman author on writing race. In both universes, she is faced with similar challenges as she tries to shape her world into the perfect one.

I feel like the fact that their friendship appears, lasts and gets stronger in every universe is very symbolic. Themes of friendship, mistakes, the past, love, choices, ownership and agency all play out well, making Maybe in Another Life a story you can follow easily from beginning to end. All I really have to do in this world is breathe in and then breathe out, in succession, until I die.and going over the thousands of paths my life could take based on one decision, this book really hit home. The pacing was pretty slow, the plot was not all that eventful and where Sliding Doors had an element of fate to it, no matter what choices you took, this did not, and so the whole premise therefore seemed a little off and pointless.

One storyline follows Hannah going home with her friends, and the other is after she decides to stay with Ethan. side note: i read this as an ebook and there were a lot of formatting issues with it, which lead to confusing transitions between the two variations of hannahs life. One night, she comes to a fork in the road and, from this moment, the chapters alternate between the two parallel lives she's going to have depending on the choice she made.

On the heels of leaving another city, Hannah moves back to her hometown of Los Angeles and takes up residence with her best friend Gabby. Taylor Jenkins Reid has written a poignant and heartfelt exploration of love and commitment in the absence of shared time that asks, what does it take to be the love of someone's life? I appreciated this aspect of the tale and it did give me a chance to reflect heavily on the decisions we make, as well as the possibility of living a very different life through a rather subtle choice. I have no idea what I want to be doing with my life, no idea what my purpose is, and no real sign of a life goal.
