About this deal

Scatter granules evenly over the whole lawn every 3-4 weeks while the grass is growing (February to September). At DIY Gardening, we follow a detailed, rigorous process to create content that is helpful, factually correct and meets the highest standard of integrity.

Although it depends on the type of lawn you have and what condition it’s in, an easy rule to adhere to is feeding once each season or even just once a year with a slow-release fertiliser. If you opt for the former, your feeding schedule might look like this: Be aware that artificial fertilisers take a lot of energy to manufacture and may have detrimental effects on the environment, so only apply if required and use the minimum amount to keep your grass in good shape – see our guide to using fertilisersand our guide to organic gardening Method 1: Plants usually easily killed using one or two applications of weedkillers containing: mecoprop-P. Examples include Doff LawnWeedkiller, Westland Resolva Lawn Weedkiller Extra or Miracle-Gro EverGreen Complete 4 in 1 (also contains fertiliser and mosskiller).Potassium helps to build plant cells, which means more resistance against diseases and drought, and is best applied in spring or autumn. If you have a very mossy lawn, I recommend reading our detailed guide to removing and preventing lawn moss which contains excellent advice on how to stop lawn moss from returning. The ONE Issue I Have With This Type of Moss Killer Regular maintenance is the best way to keep a traditional lawn looking neat and healthy, and avoid the need for larger-scale renovation later – and below are a few simple tasks you can carry out through the first half of the year. There is much confusion about how these devices work. Contrary to what many consumers think, they aren’t designed to burn the weeds to a crisp or vaporise them but instead to kill them with a short blast of scorching air. The dead weeds then naturally breakdown and decompose over the next week or so.

This US government factsheet states that Pelargonic acid is found naturally in foods and is used commercially as a food additive and consuming or inhaling small amounts poses no risk to human health. It also states “toxicity tests on non-target organisms, such as birds, fish, and honeybees, revealed little or no toxicity”. I rate this product very highly, but for the control of lawn moss in a garden where pets spend time, I feel it’s the best product out there.Annual meadow grass ( Poa annua): Will not be controlled by selectiveweedkillers. Feed to encourage other grasses.Seeds freely; always use grass box on the mower. Returf small areas of infestation. It is shallow-rooted and encouraged by frequent watering in dry weather.

I researched this product and found that the key ingredient in this pet-friendly weedkiller is Pelargonic acid, which breaks down naturally and harmlessly in the soil. It’s also a mild skin irritant, so you’ll need to keep children and pets away from the area until it’s dried, but you should be doing that anyway. An 2.8kg box should be enough to cover a 80sqm lawn (that’s about the size of 8 standard car parking spaces!)This lawn feed is particularly effective when used in the autumn through until spring for ridding your lawn of worm casts too, as the slimy remnants can make mowing the grass rather muddy and slippery. Furthermore, if you are over dosing, then turn down the spreader setting as soon as you suspect this is happening – don’t wait until you have over dosed the whole lawn Lawn feed isn’t exactly food; it’s more a combination of mineral nutrients that help your grass to grow. Just like other plants, grass needs a regular supply of nutrients to keep it growing healthily. The main nutrients needed are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), each of which provide your lawn with different benefits. Many people prefer a more relaxed approach, allowing wildflowers to flourish among the grass. And if that’s the case, you can take a break from mowing in late spring and enjoy the wildflowers that appear and the pollinating insectsand other biodiversity they attract. Springis also a good time to create a new wildflower meadow or boost the diversity of your existing lawn. A good lawn feed can banish dry, brown patches with a good dose of nutrients to the soil beneath, and encourage lush, green and fast-growing grass. Depending on the combination of nutrients included, you can boost the greenness of your grass in just a few days with a water-soluble lawn feed, or allow a slow-release of fertiliser to keep working for months on end.
